Q) Who is eligible to apply?

A) Applicants must have a degree from an accredited college or university. We are looking for individuals that have shown leadership skills, irrespective of their backgrounds, majors or professional experiences. Moreover, we recognize that leadership can manifest itself in various forms so don’t be discouraged if you don’t have the highest academic results or a lot of work experience. You might have achieved academic honors, or led your student council, managed a complex project at work, volunteered for a cause that’s important to you, organized the best freshmen’s prom. Teach for Romania is looking for the leaders of tomorrow. In particular we are interested in the following skills:

Q) How do I apply to become a Teach for Romania Fellow?

Q) I haven’t graduated from university yet, can I still get involved?

A) Yes! You can join Teach for Romania as a volunteer and help us with administrative tasks or with various projects. Check our Volunteer page for more details.

Q) What will happen after I am accepted to the program?

A) If you are accepted into the program you will receive our offer together with the TfR welcoming kit that would detail all the following steps. Once you accept the offer, the adventure begins! You will formalize the teaching contract with your assigned school and start your pre-teaching leadership development training in the Teach for Romania Leadership Academy. The Academy will be followed by a two-year teaching experience in a public school, where you will work as a full time teacher, with the guidance of mentors and the TfR staff.

Q) Can I choose the school I want to teach in?

A) If you are selected as a Fellow you will have the opportunity to express your preference regarding the schools that will be part of the program. When placing Fellows at a teaching site, Teach for Romania will make every effort to accommodate applicant preferences.

Q) What grade will I teach?

A) Teach for Romania works with elementary schools (5th to 8th grades). Teachers will be assigned a grade according to the needs of the respective schools. However, Teach for Romania will make every effort to accommodate applicant preferences.

Q) What subject will I teach?

A) The subject you will teach will be determined by the qualifications you have. For example, if you have a BA in Geography you will teach 5th to 8th grade Geography classes.

Q) I have never worked with children before. Can I still be part of the program?

A) Yes, you can. Teach for Romania will train you in teaching and leadership skills in the TfR Leadership Academy so that, when the school year starts you will be fully prepared for the job. During the Academy you will also have a chance to teach a summer school for kids from low-resourced schools in Bucharest.

Q) Am I going to receive any training from Teach for Romania?

A) Yes! Teach for Romania offers a leadership development program build with the vision that the key to success as a teacher is strong leadership. Before starting teaching you will take part in a two-months summer Leadership Academy that will help you develop knowledge and skills crucial for becoming a successful teacher and leader and highly transferrable to any field such as policy, business, management, journalism and education itself.  Read more about the Leadership Academy here.

Q) Do I have to attend the summer training program?

A) Yes. The Training is an integral part of the Teach for Romania program, destined to develop young graduates as leaders of society and it is mandatory in its entirety.

A) For the duration of the training program, all Fellows will be housed together in an accommodation provided by Teach for Romania.

Q) What financial benefits will I have as a teacher?

A) As a full-time teacher you will receive a full salary and comprehensive health and social benefits from your school district. Moreover, Teach for Romania will provide you with an additional grant to allow you to be financially stable as a corps member. As such your total remuneration will be competitive with entry-level graduate salaries in the private sector.

Q) How will the Teach for Romania Fellowship better equip me for post graduate school or for future employment opportunities?

A) The Teach for Romania Fellowship will allow Fellows to develop leadership, communication, and professional skills that are highly transferable to any other field such as policy, business, management, and journalism. This two-year experience is compatible with the pursuit of a very broad range of personal and professional goals. Throughout the two years, Fellows will also have access to numerous networking and mentoring opportunities, through our partnerships with top organizations from the private and public sectors.
